This was a GREAT meet with lifters from 3 states attending. Special Thanks to Smitty & Mable Smith,  Job Hou-seye, Jeff Phillips, Daryl & Tobey Johnson, Danny Gill, "The Gym" for helping us conduct a great meet. We had so much fun that we have decided to make this an annual event as long as Smitty would like to host the event. Thanks to Everyone for a really great weekend!

All good things must end and the final NASA Tri-State Regional Championship meet was held July 30, 2011 with a single digit number of lifters.
Still, the meet went out as it had begun, with the lifters enjoying themselves, hitting numerous personal bests and with every lifter breaking a state record along the way.
Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony Decker continued to enjoy the lifting at The Gym. Last year, he set the American Record of 429.9 pounds in the 198 equipped bench press. This year, he opened with a strong 430 pound effort in the 198 Pure Novice Division, then erased the 1998 record of 435 pounds with a solid effort at 440 pounds. He capped off a picture perfect day when he locked out a 450-pound attempt.
Scott Isamari drove down from Litchfield and showed his comeback ability when he set a State Record of 300 pounds for the Master’s 1 division, eclipsing the previous mark by 25 pounds. Scott’s second attempt at 305 failed to lock out, but he bounced right back and pushed up 305 on his third try to give him the State Record in both the Master’s 1 and Master’s Pure 181 weight classes.
The lifting in the Push-Pull Division was impressive with 63-year old Sam Greco from Granite City setting State Records in both the Master’s Pure and Master’s 3 divisions, plus breaking the exisiting record of 755 pounds, set in December of last year, with a two-lift total of 845 pounds. Sam’s big total came from a 305 bench press and a 540 deadlift.
Also lifting in the Push-Pull Division, but Raw, was 19-year old University of Missouri Rugby player Ryan Scheidt of Centralia. The question, “How much did he lift?”, was answered on Saturday, but the quesion, “How much can he lift”, is still a question with the teenage behemoth appearing able to do reps at weights of 305, 320 and 345. He was just as frightening in the deadlift, ripping 540 and then 600 pounds off the flood. His brute strength actually resulted in his missing a final attempt at 655 pounds when the bar leaped off the floor quicker than he expected. That resulted in his dropping his knees under the bar and getting called for a plane. Still his 345 bench and 600 pound deadlift well exceeded the 2006 mark of 815 pounds for the American Record.
Granite City’s Jim Stanley set two State Records in two different divisions of Power Sports. Jim lifted in the Pure and Open divisions of the 198 weight class. He opened with a 155 curl, rested and came back to break the Pure State Record with a 165-pound effort. An attempt at 170, which would have also given him the Open record failed to cooperate, but he still had one record. He cruised through his bench attempts with lifts of 275, 290 and 310. His perfect roll continued with lifts of 390 and 405 before closing the day with a 430-pound lift and a State Record total of 905 pounds in the Open Division.
Terry Stanley opted to go with equipment for the full meet and made the most of it, breaking the existing State Record in the squat with his opening attempt of 530 pounds. He tried twice to bump it, but was called once for a violation and then gravity took control with an assist from the spotters. He also cracked the State Record in the bench press with a first lift of 380 pounds. He just missed at 400 on his second, but came back to win the battle on a third attempt. He closed out his day with a strong 540 opening deadlift, but also eclipsed the current record. He increased it to 570 pounds before 600 opted to stay on the floor.
Flora’s Trey Lopez went into his second meet with three State Records in the 181-pound Teenage Class already to his credit. July 30 he was lifting in the 181 Pure Division and put his name in the Illinois Record Book four more times, establishing records in all three lifts and for total, plus going nine-for-nine. His final squat at 345 pounds looked as easy as his first two at 295 and 320. It was the same in the bench press where he virtually tossed up lifts of 225, 250 and 275, making the easy 25 pound jumps. He closed out his day without breaking a sweat on lifts of 380, 420 and 450 oounds for a 1,070-pound total.
Flora’s Matt Tolliver was one lift away from a perfect day in his first meet when his final deadlift was super glued to the lifting platform. Lifting in the 198 Pure Novice Division, Matt had it on cruise for most of the meet, owning his squats with successful lifts of 250, 300 and 320. He actually made the 320 on a fourth attempt after missing his third, only to learn it was overloaded, giving him the chance to go again. He followed Trey’s lead with successful bench attempts of 225, 250 and 275. The strong first meet came to an end with strong lifts of 340 and 375 in the deadlift before the tank went dry on a 400-pound attempt that stuck to the floor.
Josh Callahan also made his lifting debut for The Gym and turned in a strong effort with four State Records in the 275-pound class at a bodyweight of 248. Josh powered out of the bottom on attempts of 290 and 300 pounds before having trouble at 325. He also hit bench press effort of 225 and 250 pounds before the final one opted to stay on his chest. The big guy hit his groove in the deadlift, gripping and ripping weights of 390, 410 and 44 pounds off the floor.
Once again, this marked the end of a near two-decade old meet. Mable, Danny Gill, and Smitty were all unable to contribute to the meet and have opted to pull the plug before putting on a meet in which somebody gets hurt. This final meet would not have been possible without Chet and Bethany Stumpke, Steve Beccue, and Felicia Brown all stepping up. Chet and Steve took over as spotters and loaders. Chet was scheduled for surgery the week after the meet. Danny judged with his right arm in a slight from Rotatorcuff Surgery. Mable watched just two days after her sixth Chemo treatment, and Smitty rolled around in a wheelchair. The Gill Girls (Cheri and Di-Di, now Rutland) continued to be the best of the best at the table with Kay Lamb keeping a watchful eye on them.
One of the goals of this meet has always been a fund raiser for the Flora High School cheerleaders. The meet entries covered the cost of the trophy, so whatever the cheerleaders sold in sponsorships will be profit for them.
It’s been fun, but now it’s over. Still Rich and the NASA crew will be in town for the annual Christmas Meet, so mark Dec. 17 on the calander for the annual Christmas Regional. It will be fun.
